The first weeks at home with a new baby are exhausting, especially for a mother recovering from delivery. Our newborn baby care service sends a trained aya experienced with newborns, so the mother can rest and recover while the baby is looked after properly.
How a newborn aya helps
- Bathing the baby and caring for the umbilical cord stump until it falls off
- Oil massage, in the way many Bengali families prefer
- Burping, settling and helping the baby sleep
- Nappy changes and keeping the baby clean and dry
- Support with breastfeeding positions, or preparing bottles if the baby is formula-fed
- Night care, so the mother can sleep between feeds
- Helping the mother herself: meals, rest, and bathing after delivery
If the mother has had a caesarean or a difficult delivery and needs wound care or injections, an ANM nurse can visit as well. For babies past the newborn weeks and toddlers, see baby care.
When to call the doctor
An aya helps with care, not medical judgement. Any fever, refusal to feed, yellow skin that is getting worse, or breathing trouble in a newborn needs a doctor straight away. The aya will tell you if she notices any of these.
How to arrange newborn care
- Call or WhatsApp +91 90513 20961. Tell us the baby's age or due date, whether the mother had a caesarean, and whether you need day, night or both. The phone is answered around the clock by the people who will actually arrange the caregiver.
- We suggest who to send. If what you describe needs a nurse rather than an aya, or an attendant rather than either, we will say so.
- Shift and rate are agreed first. Shifts of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 24 hours are available, and you know the cost before anyone is sent.
- The caregiver comes to you, often the same day, and we check back to make sure the match is working.
Common questions
Can we book a newborn aya before the baby is born?
Yes. Call a few weeks before the due date and we will plan for the aya to start when you come home from hospital.
Does the aya stay at night?
She can. Night shifts and 24-hour care are both available, and night care is often what new parents need most.
Does a newborn aya replace the paediatrician?
No. She looks after the baby day to day. All medical questions go to the baby's doctor.
