When a family member is admitted to hospital, someone usually needs to stay with them. Our hospital aya service sends a trained aya to be that person, so the patient is not alone and the family can rest, work, or look after the rest of the household.
Hospital nurses look after many patients at once. An aya at the bedside handles the personal care and small needs in between: helping the patient eat, get to the toilet, stay clean and comfortable, and call the nurse when something is wrong.
What a hospital aya does
- Stays at the bedside for the shift you choose, including overnight
- Helps the patient eat and drink, and tells the nurse if they are not managing
- Toileting, bedpans, diaper changes and keeping the patient clean
- Helps the patient sit up, turn, and walk when the doctors allow it
- Calls the ward nurse when the patient needs attention
- Keeps the family updated by phone
Before booking
Most hospitals allow a private attendant, but rules differ on visiting hours, how many attendants are allowed and whether an attendant pass is needed. Check with the ward before the aya arrives. For a male patient who needs lifting or intimate care, a male attendant may be more suitable.
How to arrange a hospital aya
- Call or WhatsApp +91 90513 20961. Tell us the hospital, the ward and bed if you have them, the patient's condition and the shift you need. The phone is answered around the clock by the people who will actually arrange the caregiver.
- We suggest who to send. If what you describe needs a nurse rather than an aya, or an attendant rather than either, we will say so.
- Shift and rate are agreed first. Shifts of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 24 hours are available, and you know the cost before anyone is sent.
- The caregiver comes to you, often the same day, and we check back to make sure the match is working.
Common questions
Which hospitals do your ayas go to?
Hospitals across south Kolkata and the Sonarpur area. Tell us the hospital when you call and we will confirm we can cover it.
Can the same aya continue at home after discharge?
Often, yes. Many families keep the same aya when the patient comes home, which makes the move easier for everyone. See our aya service at home.
Does the aya replace the hospital nurses?
No. The hospital nurses still give all medical care. The aya looks after personal care and makes sure the patient is never left without help between rounds.
